Why should I train with weights? I do just fine with my cardio and get a great workout?

Did you know for each pound of muscle you put on your body, that pound of muscle can burn up to 25 calories per day? So if you were to put 10 pounds of muscle on your body in place of fat, you are essentially burning 600 more calories a day doing nothing. Now times the 600 calories times 7 days in a week, you are now burning 4200 extra calories in a week. Finally, there are 3500 calories in a pound, so now you have over a pound deficit per week essentially losing 1 pound a week just by putting a little muscle on your body. Sound good?

The theory is that the human body works harder to maintain a pound of muscle than it does to maintain a pound of fat. Even at rest, our bodies need energy to continue to work and burn calories. This is called your resting metabolic rate (RMR).

In terms of fat loss, strength training is the best way to increase your lean muscle mass and burn calories. Muscle works harder than fat, and calories are used to activate, contract and repair your muscles after use. Most forms of resistance exercise will increase your calorie expenditure, even in the hours post exercise. In one study, researchers found that regular weight training boosts basal metabolic rate by about 15%. This is because muscle is “metabolically active” and burns more calories than other body tissue even when you’re not moving. Adding muscle is just as important as working the muscles you already have on the body. Loss of lean mass can reduce the amount of calories you burn when dieting and working out.
